It is hard to imagine that an insect smaller than your little finger nail could kill a mighty 100 foot pine tree, but that’s what Dentroctonus Ponderosae (the western pine beetle) has been doing for millions of years. By boring under the bark of the tree to lay its eggs, the pine beetle creates a fungus which chokes the tree’s water supply, killing it instantly. Within three years, the tree dries to the familiar orange color. Under normal conditions, the beetles choose smaller and weaker trees, thus naturally thinning the forest and making it healthier.
But when temperatures rise, and conditions dry, the populations of the beetle soar, and entire stands of forest can be wiped out. A trip today into any mountain zone of the western United States or Canada will prove this obvious.
It is the choice of GIRO Wood Works to put this naturally harvested material to use. The fact that no live trees are cut to make our products is a cornerstone of our philosophy. We also feel that the blue stain created by the fungus adds a unique aesthetic quality to objects made from this wood. Sometimes subtle; often dramatic; but always interesting, these stain patterns make each item produced a one of a kind treasure.
